5 Etiquettes of Sleeping

The Prophets(??? ???? ???? ????) conduct when going to sleep indicates many things, including his desire to make the remembrance of Allah the last activity of the night, just as he would make it the first activity in the morning. His etiquettes in preparing to fall asleep can be summarisedas follows:

1. Not Delaying Sleep After the Isha Prayer Unless There was a Necessity

As recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet(??? ???? ???? ????) disliked sleeping before Isha and talking after it. If there is a necessity, such as discussing Islamic sciences, speaking to guests or conversing with ones family, then there is no problem.

2. Making Wudu Before Sleeping

In order to fall asleep in a state of purity, the Prophet(??? ???? ???? ????) would make the same ablution he would as he would when wishing to pray. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

3. Sleeping on Ones Right Side

Likewise, the Prophet(??? ???? ???? ????) recommended that one sleeps on his right side with his cheek resting on his hand. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) If he then turns on his left during the night, there is no problem with that.

4. Abstaining from Sleeping on Ones Stomach

The Prophet(??? ???? ???? ????) likened sleeping on ones stomach to the actions of the people of the Hellfire and an act which Allah hates. (Abu Dawud)

5. Supplicating the Specific Supplications for Sleeping

Such as Ayat al-Kursi and the last three chapters of the Quran. Thereby, one ends the day remembering Allah just as he begun the day, remembering Allah with the specific supplications for waking up.

And Allah knows best
